Library Matters...

Highlights of Board Actions - As recorded in the February Monthly Meeting Minutes, the members present concluded that FoCPL needed to formulate a statement regarding the recent controversial FVRL Board of Trustees meetings about 1) the procedures and 2) the language adopted in the final FVRL Strategic Plan 2026-2030.

Four members volunteered to prepare a statement for review and approval at the March 19th Monthly Meeting.

Proposed Statement

The members of the FVRL Board of Trustees violated the Trustee Ethics and Responsibilities Policy by disregarding the community's input and ignoring the outcome of the publicly funded, 10-month strategic planning process.

We ask the Clark County Council to evaluate whether each trustee possesses the commitment to "support the mission of a public library in a free society", as stated in the Trustee Ethics & Responsibility Policy.

We ask each member of the Board of Trustees to ask yourself if you are committed to the Trustee Ethics. Will you do your job and follow the rules? If not, resign.

As advocates for library services and programs, we, the Friends of the Cascade Park Library, support the library's role in our community to be welcoming and responsive, with a commitment to equal and equitable access for all.

Despite the changes by a group of trustees to eliminate equitable access and weaken intellectual freedom, the goals and objectives of the Strategic Plan 2026-2030 remain intact and provide the framework for FVRLibraries to steadily "champion equitable access to literacy and lifelong learning for all" (Jennifer Giltrop, Strategic Plan, p.3).

We, the Friends of the Cascade Park Library, do endorse the statements approved to date by the Friends of White Salmon Library, Battleground Library, Vancouver Community Library, and La Center Community Library, expressing a vote of no confidence in the FVRLibraries Board of Trustees.
